nothing matches that. how restful. stay exactly where you are.
-
how do i undo the damage of sitting all day?
mooyou don't undo it in one go, and you don't need to. the research is about breaking up the sitting, not making up for it afterwards. every time you stand for a minute you interrupt the thing doing the harm. so get up now. then again in a while. a hundred small interruptions beat one heroic workout at the end of the day.
Dracu-Mooundo it tomorrow. tonight is for the couch.
-
does exercise cancel out sitting all day?
moomostly no, and that surprised the researchers too. people who exercise and then sit for the rest of the day still carry most of the risk. there's a name for it: the active couch potato. the gym was one hour. the chair gets the other twenty three, and i'd like a word about those.
Dracu-Mooyou did your run. you've done enough. moo lah lah.
-
how often should i get up from my desk?
mooin the lab, five minutes every half hour did the most for blood sugar and blood pressure. in real life, with about nineteen thousand people over two weeks, hourly was the rhythm people actually kept. i'd rather you did hourly for a year than every thirty minutes for a week. free, i turn up five times a day. premium, you pick.
Dracu-Mooonce. at the end. to leave.
-
i want to move more. is there a cute app for that?
moothere is a cow. i live in your phone, and a few times a day i fly in and ask for sixty seconds. there's a villain who would rather you didn't. eleven herds so the moves fit your body, including one for staying in the chair. no ads, no account, made by a nonprofit. people say i'm cute. i try not to let it go to my head.
Dracu-Moocute is a trap. the couch is honest.
-
how do i remember to stand up during the day?
mooyou don't, is the honest answer. nobody remembers. in the big study, the people who kept it up used timers, and by the end of two weeks most of them didn't need the timer anymore. so borrow a nervous system for a while. mine is available.
Dracu-Mooyou'll remember later. later is a lovely time.
-
what is an active couch potato?
moosomeone who works out and then sits for the rest of the day. researchers named it in 2010. it describes most people with a gym membership and a desk job, and it turns out the gym doesn't cover the desk. no judgement. i'm a cow. i sit down too.
Dracu-Mooa person with excellent priorities.
-
is sitting really the new smoking?
moono, and the researchers who checked were quite firm about it. smoking roughly doubles your risk of dying early. long sitting adds ten to twenty percent. that's real and worth fixing, but it isn't smoking. the phrase was catchy. catchy isn't the same as true.
Dracu-Moocorrect. so sit down. i knew you'd see reason.
-
what are movement snacks?
mooa minute or two of moving, several times a day, instead of one long session. researchers found that even brief bursts of effort a few times a day showed up in the mortality data. i am, technically, a snack dispenser.
Dracu-Moosnacks are for eating. sitting down.
-
i work from home and never move. what do i do?
moothe walk to the meeting room is gone, the walk to the printer is gone, and nobody replaced them. so replace them on purpose. get up for sixty seconds a few times a day. it doesn't matter what you do with it. i'll do the remembering. you do the standing.
Dracu-Moothe fridge is right there. and then straight back to the chair.
-
can a standing desk fix this?
mooit helps a bit, and it isn't a fix. standing still all day has costs of its own. a study of eighty three thousand people found that standing more than two hours a day carried its own circulatory risk. the answer is moving, not swapping one still position for another. stand, sit, move, repeat.
Dracu-Moostanding desks are wonderful. you can lean on them.
-
what's the least i can do?
moosixty seconds, a few times a day. that's genuinely it. not a routine, not a plan. stand up, walk to a window, sit back down. i built a whole app around how little that is.
Dracu-Mooless than that. i believe in you.
-
why am i so tired at 3pm?
moopart of it is your body clock. there's a dip after lunch that shows up even in people who skip lunch. part of it is the chair. in two studies that measured fatigue directly, getting up for a few minutes helped. coffee treats the symptom. standing up treats the cause.
Dracu-Moonap. at your desk. i'll keep watch.
-
how do i get my kids to move more?
moodon't take recess away as a punishment. the american academy of pediatrics and the institute of medicine both say it backfires, because the children who lose it are the ones who needed it most. movement helps them learn. i'm free for all ages, and i'm told the six year olds sing my song.
Dracu-Mooscreens are very quiet. so peaceful.
-
is this just a timer?
mooa timer is part of it. a timer with a cow, a villain, eleven herds of moves, a song, moods, and no ads is the rest of it. the timer is why it works. the cow is why you keep it.
Dracu-Mooit's a timer. delete it. i'll make you a cup of tea.
-
do i have to do it every hour?
moono. free is five a day at set times. premium lets you choose every two hours, every hour, or every thirty minutes. pick the one you'll still be doing next month. that one wins.
Dracu-Moopick never. it's very consistent.
-
what happens if i ignore you?
moonothing. no guilt, no notification asking where you've been, no leaderboard watching. i turn up again next time. i'm a cow. i have a great deal of patience.
Dracu-Moofinally. someone who listens.
-
my back hurts from sitting, what do i do?
moositting still for hours is usually the cause, so interrupting it helps more than stretching harder will. the muscles that hold you upright get tired, the hips shorten, and your lower back ends up carrying the difference. get up every hour and the position keeps changing, which is the bit your back actually wants. if the pain wakes you at night, runs down a leg, or arrived with a fall, go see someone with a qualification.
Dracu-Mooyour back hurts because you moved. hold very still and it'll pass.
-
how long is too long to sit?
moothirty to sixty minutes in one unbroken stretch is where most of the studies put the first useful interruption. there's no cliff edge, which is annoying if you came here wanting a number. the length of each stretch does more work than your daily total, so the thing worth watching is how long it's been since you last stood up.
Dracu-Mooyou'll know it's too long when the chair says so. the chair never says so.
-
i have a standing desk and now my legs hurt?
mooalternate, because standing is a position too and holding it all day sends its own bill. the big tracker studies found no heart benefit from standing more, and long standing bouts brought problems of their own. so sit, stand, and walk away from the desk for sixty seconds in between. a mat and shoes with some give do more than people expect.
Dracu-Moosit down. i mentioned this when you bought the desk.
-
how do i stop slouching?
moochange position often, because nobody can hold a perfect one for eight hours. screen at eye level, feet flat, shoulders loose, and then let the hourly stand reset all of it. fretting about your posture tends to cost more than the slouch does. i slouch constantly. i'm shaped like a barrel.
Dracu-Mooslouching is simply sitting with commitment.
-
what is tech neck and is it real?
moothe soreness is real. it's a strain pattern in the neck and upper back from hours of looking down at a screen. the famous sixty pounds of load figure is a computer model rather than a measurement on people, though, and one careful study found no link at all between the posture and the pain. so take the ache seriously and the number with salt. raise the screen and look up now and then.
Dracu-Mooyour head's heavy because it's full of excellent ideas about sitting.
-
is it bad to sit cross legged all day?
mooone leg tucked under you isn't a crisis. the all day part is what gets you, whatever shape you fold into. crossed legs do tend to tilt the pelvis so one hip takes extra work, so swap sides, and get up between folds. bodies like variety far more than they like any single correct position.
Dracu-Moocross the other leg. there. you've moved. well done.
-
how many hours a day does the average person sit?
moomost desk workers land somewhere between eight and ten hours once they count work, the commute and the evening. the surveys disagree wildly, partly because people are terrible at estimating their own sitting, so your total is worth more than any average. we built a calculator that adds it up and keeps nothing.
Dracu-Moothe average is whatever you did today. congratulations, you're perfectly normal.
-
why can't i remember to take breaks?
moobecause remembering is a bad job for a brain that's busy. good work removes the clock, which is rather the point of good work. in the studies, the people who kept it up used an outside cue, and by the end most of them needed it less. borrowing a reminder isn't a character flaw. it's just cheaper than willpower.
Dracu-Mooyou remembered once, at 4pm, on a tuesday. i was disappointed.
-
how do i build a habit of moving?
moomake the cue reliable, make the action small enough to be slightly embarrassing, and let a missed day mean nothing. sixty seconds is small on purpose. most people say it stops feeling like effort somewhere in the second week. i'll never punish you for skipping one.
Dracu-Moobegin on monday. monday's a wonderful day for beginning.
-
what's a good pomodoro for movement?
moofold a sixty second stand into the five minute break, and one habit covers both jobs. twenty five minutes of work then a break is a focus method, and it says nothing at all about standing up, which is why plenty of people take that break sitting down with a phone. the standing is the part you have to add yourself.
Dracu-Mootake the break. take it in the chair. take a second one.
-
i set reminders and ignore them. now what?
moothe ignoring is usually the reminder's fault. a buzz that looks like every other buzz gets swiped before your brain joins in. so make it something you notice, make the ask tiny, and make skipping one genuinely fine. i turn up as a flying cow with a villain in pursuit. harder to swipe past a plot.
Dracu-Mookeep ignoring. you're extremely good at it.
-
how do i take breaks without losing focus?
moosixty seconds is short enough that the thread holds. long enough to stand, look at something far away, and sit back down. i won't promise you a focus boost, because the big study didn't find one in adults. if you're mid thought, finish the thought first. i'll still be here.
Dracu-Mootrue focus requires eight uninterrupted hours and a locked door.
-
what happens to your body when you sit for 8 hours?
mooblood sugar and blood pressure drift up, the hips shorten, the lower back takes the load, and the afternoon gets heavier. the reason is that the machinery clearing sugar and fat out of your blood works better when your leg muscles are being used, and it goes quiet when they aren't. almost none of it is permanent. standing up interrupts it, which is why frequency beats intensity here.
Dracu-Mooeight hours is barely a warm up.
-
does standing burn more calories than sitting?
mooyes, and far less than the internet promises. harvard health puts the gap at roughly eight calories an hour, which is about fifty across a working day. that's one apple. a short walk beats hours of standing without trying. so stand because it changes your position, and walk because that's where the numbers actually live.
Dracu-Moofifty calories. imagine spending a whole day on one apple.
-
what is NEAT?
moonon exercise activity thermogenesis, which is a very long way of saying everything you burn by moving about that nobody would call a workout. pacing on a call, stairs, cooking, fidgeting. the gap between two similar people can run into hundreds of calories a day, and desk work is where NEAT goes to die. i'm essentially a NEAT delivery service.
Dracu-MooNEAT sounds like tidying. sit down until the feeling passes.
-
how many steps a day do i actually need?
mooprobably not ten thousand. the 2025 lancet public health review pooled fifty seven studies and found about seven thousand a day captured most of the benefit, with only small gains after that. even going from two thousand to four thousand helped meaningfully. the ten thousand came from the name of a 1960s pedometer rather than from any study.
Dracu-Mooseven thousand. per year. spread them out.
-
what is the 20-20-20 rule and does it work?
mooevery twenty minutes, look at something about twenty feet away for twenty seconds. the idea underneath it, giving your focusing muscles a rest, is sound. a 2022 paper that went looking for evidence behind those exact numbers couldn't justify them, so hold it as a rule of thumb. look up often. the specific numbers matter less than the looking up.
Dracu-Moolook at something twenty feet away. i suggest the couch.
-
does walking after eating help blood sugar?
mooyes, and it's one of the better returns on two minutes available anywhere. in a 2023 trial that broke up sitting with short walks, the post meal blood sugar spike came down by more than half, and blood pressure came down a few points too. the walk after lunch is the highest value one of the day.
Dracu-Moodigestion requires absolute stillness. i read that somewhere.
-
why does my brain feel foggy in the afternoon?
mooa few of the popular explanations for this don't hold up, including the one about the air in your office. what does hold up is duller. your body clock dips in the early afternoon, a heavy lunch adds to it, and hours of stillness add to it, and stillness is the only one of the three you can change in sixty seconds. daylight on your face helps too.
Dracu-Moofog is your brain politely requesting a lie down. be polite back.
-
how do i move more when i have back to back meetings?
moostand for the ones where you're mostly listening. nobody can tell. if it's audio only, walk it, and a stanford study on walking and creative thinking found people came up with around sixty percent more ideas on their feet. the two minutes between calls is a real gap too. spend one of them upright.
Dracu-Moocamera on. seated. professional. that's the look.
-
how do i take movement breaks in an open office without looking weird?
moowalk somewhere. the far bathroom, the window, the kettle, the printer. all of it counts and none of it looks like anything. calf raises while the printer warms up are completely invisible. and honestly, the person two desks over is also wondering whether they're allowed to stretch. someone has to go first.
Dracu-Moopeople are watching. people are always watching. best stay seated.
-
what's a good stretch to do at my desk?
mooif you only do one, stand up and open the front of your hips, because sitting keeps them short all day and they complain about it later. after that, roll the shoulders back a few times and tip one ear towards each shoulder for the neck. thirty seconds each. no mat, no changing clothes, no plan.
Dracu-Moostretch by reaching for something you didn't need.
-
can i take a movement break during a zoom call?
mooyes. stand up. standing on camera reads as normal now, and half the call will wish they'd thought of it first. camera off means you can walk about freely. i'd skip the full sixty seconds during your own presentation, and that's the only rule i've got.
Dracu-Mooyour chair is contractually part of this meeting.
-
how do teachers fit movement into a lesson?
moosixty seconds between activities, at the moment the room has already stopped listening. it works because it's too short to cost the lesson anything, and it gives you the transition you were going to need anyway. we made a countdown that runs on any projector, free, with no account, no video and no wifi.
Dracu-Moochildren should be seated. it's traditional.
-
what are brain breaks?
mooshort bursts of movement or silliness between chunks of learning, usually thirty seconds to five minutes. teachers use them to reset a room that's gone glassy. the trick is matching the break to the energy already in the room, so we sorted forty of them that way.
Dracu-Mooa break for the brain should involve lying down.
-
how do i get my team to move more?
moodo it yourself, out loud, first. stand up in the meeting and say why, and the permission spreads faster than any policy ever written. skip the leaderboard, because the people who most need this are the first to quit a competition. there's nothing for IT to set up, no accounts to provision and no dashboard to look at.
Dracu-Mooschedule a wellness meeting. seated. ninety minutes.
-
is SuperMoo free?
mooyes. five nudges a day, sixty seconds each, no account and no ads. premium adds things like picking your own times and how often, plus the Apple Watch. you never have to buy it, and nothing gets taken away if you don't. we're a nonprofit, so there's no second act to this.
Dracu-Moofree things are suspicious. delete it and lie down.
-
does SuperMoo track me?
moosix things leave your device, and the privacy page names the company on the other end of each one. that goes down to a weather lookup and a font request we'd rather be rid of. your moves, your times and your streak stay on your phone. no account, no email, no password, no ads inside the app, and we never sell your data. go read the list and hold us to it.
Dracu-Moonobody's watching you. certainly not me. from here.
-
does SuperMoo work on apple watch?
mooyes. a tap on the wrist, and you can finish the whole move on the Apple Watch without picking up your phone. it's part of premium, and one purchase covers iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch.
Dracu-Mooa watch that taps you is a rude watch.
-
why a cow?
moobecause cows spend the entire day on their feet, wandering and eating and being unhurried about it, and they aren't smug about it either. nobody has ever felt judged by a cow. a cow asking you to get out of the chair is somehow easier to take than a person doing it. i also hatched from an egg, which is unusual, and we don't discuss it.
Dracu-Moowhy a cow indeed. i ask myself daily.
i'm a cow in your phone. let's moooove.
five times a day, free. sixty seconds each. a villain who would rather you didn't. made by a nonprofit, with no ad trackers.
